Monday, July 11…5 days before I depart for Scotland. It is my 5th trip to this ancient epicenter of golf. Courses on my itinerary include: Royal Aberdeen, The Old Course, The Golf House at Elie and my home club, Crail which features the Balcomie and Craigshead courses. In the past I have also played Turnberry, Carnoustie, The Castle Course, Levin Links, Lundin Links and Kingsbarn.

I have the trip down to a science now. I never pre-book the Old Course via an agent. That would add 2 grand to my trip. I do, however, try to book a year in advance via the ballot or the night-before ballot. Usually I am a single and just show up to the starter’s booth at 3 am and place my bag in queue. I find a good airfare to Edinburgh, rent a car, stay at St. Andrews University and golf. Usually 90 holes in 4 days.

This year I may try to slip away and catch a day of the Senior British Open at Carnoustie.

Next blog…my favorite course in Scotland. It might surprise you.
